PWC: Lee scores GTS pole at Sonoma
Andy Lee will start on pole for Saturday afternoon's Round 15 GTS race at Sonoma Raceway, at the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Sonoma presented by Kia.
Weather conditions for the 30-minute qualifying session were held under 67 degree temperatures with overcast conditions. Early on, championship points leader Michael Cooper in the No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Z28 went to the top of the charts with a 1:41.216. Kia Optima teammates Mark Wilkins and Ben Clucas posted the next quickest times with a 1:41.448 and a 1:41.514, respectively. Wilkins pilots the No. 38 PutOnTheBrakes.Org Kinetic Motorsports / Kia Racing Kia Optima, while Clucas pilots the No. 36 DonorsChoose.Org Kinetic Motorsports / Kia Racing Kia Optima.
Ten minutes into the session, Lee posted the quickest time of the session to take the pole with a 1:40.961. Cooper's time stood for second on the grid, while Wilkins' and Clucas' times also stood – they will start third and fourth, respectively.
Both Lee's and Cooper's times broke the previous qualifying lap record set in 2014 by Jack Baldwin, in his Porsche Cayman at 1:41.250 (84.800 mph). For Lee, it's his first pole of the 2015 season, and the ninth of his Pirelli World Challenge career.
