IndyCar: Foyt to miss races after surgery
A.J. Foyt will miss the final two races of the IndyCar season while he recovers from recent surgery to his knee.
The 80-year-old underwent surgery on August 10 after suffering a staph infection in his right artificial knee; a similar procedure to one performed on his left knee in early 2012.
Doctors removed the prosthesis and replaced it with an antibiotic-infused cement spacer to help clear the infection. That is expected to remain in place for around six weeks, after which Foyt will undergo another procedure to have a new artificial knee implanted. A further six weeks of recovery time will follow.
"This is one of the worst things I've gone through in my life," said the four-time Indy 500 winner. "Knowing I have five or six weeks dealing with this, and then having to get operated on again to take the spacer out and put in a new knee."
"This staph infection, it's the second time I've had it and it's really beat me down. I don't know if I'll ever be like I used to be but I'm sure hoping, so I'm fighting awful hard."
AJ Foyt Enterprises drivers Takuma Sato and Jack Hawksworth are currently placed 14th and 17th respectively in the IndyCar standings ahead of this weekend's race at Pocono.
