BMW's Blomqvist appeal rejected

BMW's appeal of Tom Blomqvist's disqualification from the Sunday Norisring DTM race has been unsuccessful.

Blomqvist was excluded from his 16th place finish last month when stewards deemed a new driver cooling system fitted to the car - outside of its homologation - was potentially performance enhancing.

An appeal was lodged by the manufacturer, which was keen to fit the system across its fleet of M4s if the test case proved successful.

Why BMW's Blomqvist appeal is significant

Blomqvist's chassis was taken away for further investigation by the DMSB and partner Dekra, relating to the flow of air into and out of the car and system, and whether it provided any aerodynamic benefit.

Air was guided into the electronically-managed system from above the rear wheel arches, into the driver's seat, then discharged above the rear diffuser.

Taking the view that the system did influence vehicle performance, the German governing body's court of appeal has now upheld the original technical breaches.
