F1: Singapore GP modifies track layout
Singapore's Marina Bay Formula 1 circuit has been modified ahead of September's grand prix, with race officials hopeful the tweaks will increase overtaking opportunities.
The changes will affect Turns 11, 12 and 13 and have come about as part of enhancements to Singapore's Civic District that tie with with the city-state's 50th anniversary of independence.
The FIA has approved the circuit modifications, which involve the Turn 11 right-hander remaining but sitting tighter with the left-hand side of Fullerton Road to slightly reduce corner speed.
The Turn 12 right-hander is tighter, too, and now flows into the left lane of Anderson Bridge, while the Turn 13 hairpin has been widened by one meter.
"It's a win-win situation that the development of the new arts, culture and lifestyle precinct will provide an upgraded experience, but also potentially make for closer racing at this year's Singapore Grand Prix," said deputy chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd Colin Syn.
Faithful+Gould senior project manager and engineering track manager Jonathan Giesecke added: "I expect the modifications from Turns 11 to 13 will enable closer racing and the potential for additional passing opportunities."
