SCCA: Opening races of the weekend Majors double-header checkered at Mid-Ohio
Rain showers threatened throughout the day on Saturday, but only affected one race of the U.S. Majors Tour Northern Conference Round Three and Northeastern Conference Round Five race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
A quality turnout represented drivers from 27 Runoffs-eligible classes who took to the 15-turn, 2.4-mile circuit to complete 25-minute sprint races. The aforementioned rain was a brief shower that occurred during the middle laps of the Production and GT-Lite race. The rain fell for less than five minutes and was gone as quickly as it came. Sunshine followed and completely dried the course before the race was complete.Spec Miata produced another close finish with Justin Hille, of Canfield, Ohio, taking the provisional win in his No. 48 Hilltrux/Roush Mazda Miata. His win came as the result of a close, tight battle with Alex Bolanos and other front-runners that raged for 15 laps.In B-Spec, John Heinricy, of Clarkston, Michigan, was the victor in his No. 35 Matick Chevy/Hoosier/Hawk Performance Chevrolet Sonic. For much of the 15-lap race, the five class leaders lapped the circuit nose-to-tail. As time ticked away, Heinricy was pulled out a lead on the other drivers and crossed the line with a comfortable two-second gap.F Production winner Charlie Campbell, of Corry, Pennsylvania, was in the right place at the right time to take advantage of the short shower that fell during the mid-point of the 15-lap race. In his No. 89 Campbell Brothers Racing/Jesse Prather Motorsports Mazda Miata, Campbell was able to pass a spinning Sam Henry in the 'Keyhole' corner. He was then able to hold off Eric Prill in the closing laps of the race to secure the win.In the same run group, Joe Moser, of Wilmette, Illinois, took home the E Production win by a 3-second margin over class rival Toby Grahovec. Moser kept his No. 63 Hoosier/King Motorsports Honda Prelude on the straight and narrow, even navigating the short shower that popped up during the race.Andrew Whitston, of Neenah, Wisconsin, brought home the winner's hardware in Formula Vee after a close battle with Brandon Abbott for the class win. Whitston, in his No. 9 Rocket Motors/Subway Protoform P2, crossed the line less than one second again of Abbott.Michael Lewis, of Poway, California was the class of the GT-1 field, but behind him was a gaggle of GT-2 cars fighting for the class win. Pete Peterson, of Lumberton, North Carolina, emerged as the class winner in his No. 98 Toyota/Valvoline/Goodyear Toyota Celica over a hard-charging Jonathan Start.JR Osborne, of Greenwood Village, Colorado, took home overall honors in the Wings 'n Things group behind the wheel of his No. 83 RFR Racecars/Geartronics Firman F1000. The race was shortened by five minutes due to extensive cleanup that was needed for a four-car incident during the closing laps of the race.Additional information, including interviews with the winning drivers and results, on the Mid-Ohio Majors can be found at SCCA.com/MidOhioMajors.Like SCCA on Facebook at Facebook.com/SCCAOfficial and follow the Club on Twitter @SCCAOfficial.LEXINGTON, Ohio - Provisional race winners for Saturday's U.S. Majors Tour Northern Conference Round Three and Northeastern Conference Round Five at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
