World Touring: Thompson withdraws from Hungary

James Thompson has withdrawn from the Hungarian round of the World Touring Car Championship on medical grounds, his Lada Sport team has confirmed.

Thompson, twice a champion at British and European level, had a muted qualifying session and was due to start 14th on the grid in the first race.

He reportedly has been suffering from a dental abscess.

"I am disappointed not to be in the car but was not feeling great today," he said, "and doctors advised it best that I should not drive."

With Rickard Rydell also absent owing to a bout of thyroiditis, Thompson's withdrawal leaves 16 cars on the grid.
