Report: IndyCar street race in Boston gathering momentum

The likes of St. Petersburg and Long Beach may soon be joined as waterfront backdrops for IndyCar races by Boston, Mass., according to The Boston Herald, which reports that a local group’s plan to bring an IndyCar street race to the city's Seaport District on Labor Day weekend next year is gaining momentum.

“We’re working on it, we’re looking to see if it works for the city,” Mayor Martin J. Walsh said of the proposal by IndyCar Boston, a group led by former IndyCar executive Mark Perrone. “Certainly it would be a great opportunity for promotion of the city.”

According to the Herald, IndyCar Boston has begun laying out its plans to neighborhood groups, including at a meeting last week of the Friends of Fort Point Channel.

IndyCar Boston is "nearing the final stages of negotiations with the city, and then must determine what – if any – state agencies may be involved," the Herald reports, noting that organizers expect a final announcement in the coming months.
