Vergne claims another Formula E pole in Miami

Jean-Eric Vergne claimed his second pole position of the inaugural season of the Formula E Championship on the streets of Miami. The Andretti Autosport driver followed up on his top spot in Punta del Este in Uruguay in December by edging out Nelson Piquet jr. during qualifying for the fifth Formula E round, and the first in the United States.

Vergne ended up on a 1m05.953s and Piquet five hundredths back on 1m06.003s, both setting their times in the third of the four five-car mini-sessions. They pushed Nicolas Prost, who had topped the times in the first session on a 1m06.167s in his e.dams entry, down to third.

Sam Bird, who had been quickest in the brief practice session for Virgin Racing, was just three thousandths behind in fourth.

Daniel Abt ended up fifth fastest in the best of the Abt Spark-Renault SRT_01Es and Stephane Sarrazin was sixth in his Venturi entry. Championship leader Lucas di Grassi ended up seventh fastest in the second Abt car.

Each of the mini-sessions was cut from 10 to eight minutes following delays completing the 1.35-mile Miami ePrix circuit, which resulted in practice starting nearly three hours late.

The race airs live this afternoon on Fox Sports 2, and later in the day of Fox Sports 1.
