Corey Fergus's column: Racing what I know
Hi everyone. I will be racing the #00 Porsche Cayman for Motorsports Promotions in the Pirelli World Challenge TC class. I am also a Porsche Brand Specialist at Byers Imports.
For the past three seasons, I have raced in IMSA's Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. This is a very competitive series and is a lot of fun. Each race is 2.5 hours long and you are required to have two drivers per car. They're mini-endurance races. I raced a Mini Cooper, Honda Civic, BMW 3 series, and a Porsche Cayman in that series.
The issue with a series like that is that it is hard to get noticed. Having two drivers per car and long races, anything can happen. You could have the best car and be the best driver, but if your co-driver crashes or you have a bad pit stop, your race is over. It was quite frustrating at times and I seem to have had some bad luck throughout my three years. Some good did come from it though, too. I collected three poles and one win, along with several top-5 finishes.
But that's not good enough for me. I was born in a family steeped in auto racing. I'm also a third generation racer. I grew up at the track and watched my father win 14 championships. Naturally, I don't want to race; I want to win.
So for 2015, I am making to switch to a new series. Pirelli World Challenge is a single-driver series, meaning it will be just me in the car. Each race is a "sprint race," lasting 30-40 minutes. It's a completely different strategy now. There's no conserving. It's everything you have for the whole race. I'm very much looking forward to this season. I think this is my chance to get back into the spotlight and show what I can do.
I'm also racing something I'm very passionate about, a Porsche Cayman. I'm racing what I'm selling, which is pretty cool. Byers Imports has been very supportive of my racing career. I'm very fortunate they let me race and be away from the dealership occasionally. They have even purchased a promotional Cayman to travel to each race as well. It will be wrapped just like my race car but be 100% a street legal car. It will also be at the dealership time to time so be sure to stop by and check it out if you're in the area.
The first race weekend of the season is March 6-8. We are going to Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas. This is the relatively new Formula 1 track. It's an amazing facility and technical track.
