WTCC: Oriola withdrawn from Macau finale
Campos Racing has been forced to withdraw Pepe Oriola from the World Touring Car Championship finale in Macau.
An accident in Friday's half-hour Q1 qualifying session caused damage to the Spaniard's Chevrolet that could not be repaired at the track.
Oriola was substituting for Campos's regular 2014 driver Dusan Borkovic, who injured his hand in an accident at Beijing's Goldenport circuit. Having spent the season sidelined from racing, Oriola impressed on Thursday by taking fifth in the opening free practice session. However, the WTCC race-winner suffered a troubled start to day two by crashing at Paiol in Friday's second practice session.
Assistance from other RML Chevrolet teams in providing parts allowed Oriola to take part in qualifying, but a second accident followed just five minutes into the session. His car sustained heavy front-end damage in a shunt that caused the session to be red-flagged.
Campos's hopes for Macau now rest on its second TC1 driver Hugo Valente, who will start Sunday's reversed-grid race from pole position.
