F1: McLaren restructures technical team

The McLaren Formula 1 team has begun a streamlining of its technical structure as part of its ongoing revamp.

McLaren bosses have moved to make its organization more efficient. That has resulted in a number of staff being told that they no longer have a future at the team. This includes its head of aerodynamics Doug McKiernan, who has been put on gardening leave.

A McLaren spokesman told AUTOSPORT: "We are working extremely hard to get McLaren back to where it belongs - at the very front of the grid. To achieve that we have carefully reviewed everything we do and have recruited some very talented individuals.

"Now, to ensure that we do not have duplication of roles, and that we have the right people doing the right jobs, we have begun discussions with a small number of people who unfortunately do not have a role in the new structure. We are determined to give as much support as possible to anyone affected."

Team insiders say that Prodromou has impressed since joining McLaren, and the first fruits of his labors will be seen at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a major upgrade to the car. The team is making a big push to ensure that it is ready to make the most of a switch to Honda power in 2015.

Its hopes will be further boosted with the imminent signing of Fernando Alonso, whose signing will force McLaren to choose between Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button for next year.
