Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione, LM24 class-winner, goes to auction

The penultimate Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione, one of only 12 built, will be auctioned at the Bonhams sale in Scottsdale, Ariz. next January.

Run by Scuderia Filipinetti, chassis 09079 won the GT class in the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans (BELOW) in the hands of Swiss pairing Rico Steinemann and Dieter Spoerry. In a race of heavy attrition – only 16 of the 54 cars reached the finish – the Ferrari crossed the line 11th overall and a full nine laps ahead of its closest GT rival, a Porsche 911S.

This particular 275GTB/C, with close to 300hp from a 3.3-liter V12 – the same engine that powered the mighty 250LM to overall victory in ’65 – was still competitive two years later when it clinched class victory at the Spa 1000km and Imola 500km races. Its ultra-thin aluminum body, when combined with a lightened steel and aluminum chassis, produced a weight saving of 330lbs over a regular 275 GTB.

Bonhams' Scottsdale Auction will be held on January 15, 2015. For a full list and pictures of the exotic cars going under the hammer, click here.
