The 2014 Skip Barber Summer Series wrapped up a stellar season this past weekend at Lime Rock Park. A new generation of motorsports talent took to the track to prove they are well on their way to becoming professional racecar drivers. Following in the footsteps of some of the of the most successful Skip Barber Racing School graduates today including Ryan Hunter-Reay, AJ Allmendinger, Spencer Pigot, and many others, this new group of racers showcased their skill development by racing in both dry and wet conditions.
“This season showcased an amazing array of talented racers," said Race Series Coordinator Jeff Lail. “The competition was top notch and we cannot wait to see these guys prove that they are some of the best racers in the world as they progress with their career.”
The top five Formula drivers will regroup in Atlanta for the Championship Shootout held in Braselton, GA. The champion will receive a $200,000 Mazda Developmental scholarship to move into USF2000.
Karts to Cars Scholarship winner and Australian driver Luke Gabin stood victorious for the Formula Skip Barber series. While in the MAZDASPEED Challenge, Rookie driver Sam Adams took the championship. In the Skip Barber Formula Master’s category, veteran racer Pat Daly won the top spot and in the MAZDASPEED Challenge Master’s category, Michael Auriemma also took home top honors.
The Formula Skip Barber championship points battle proved to be nothing short of exciting. Entering the weekend, only 7 points separated Shootout standouts Luke Gabin and Michai Stephens. Gabin, the champion for the 2013 Karts to Cars Shootout, and Stephens, the champion for the 2013 INDYCAR Academy, have proven to be formidable foes in the series exchanging wins at tracks across the country. However, due to Stephens' success with this year’s Team USA Scholarship, he traveled to England to represent the USA and could not compete in the series finale.
