IMSA: Coyote custom DP body on hold

Daytona Prototype constructor Coyote Cars leads the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship's Prototype class with Action Express Racing, and despite having a new body design available, it appears the manufacturer will continue to see its cars race with Corvette DP bodies.

The North Carolina-based firm commissioned a new, generic body from England's Delta Motosport for its DP chassis as an option for those interested in running something other than a Chevrolet engine and body, yet with no takers, Coyote boss (and AXR team manager) Gary Nelson says it will take a buyer to bring the bodywork from the digital realm to reality.

"I think the proper term is the project is idling," Nelson told RACER. "It's idling until a customer appears. We're having a lot of success with the Coyote Corvette DP chassis; we've won four out of nine races this year, and it's competitive, and the only thing we didn't have was a different body for someone who might want to put another engine in the car, so we have it ready if that customer comes along."

Nelson showed this writer a rendering of Delta's new DP Gen3 Coyote body last November, and it looked rather distinctive and aggressive. It marks the second DP body Delta has designed for Coyote after its DP Gen2 kit (ABOVE) was used prior to the Corvette DP's introduction in 2012.

A revised Corvette DP body is under consideration by GM Racing, and provided it receives approval, Coyote would have another body to put into production.

"Coyote is working very closely with Chevrolet, and all of the Coyotes on the track have Chevrolet bodies on them, but I wouldn't be able to comment on it at the moment," Nelson added.
