Agag sure Battersea race will happen

Formula E boss Alejandro Agag is so confident that the London fixture will go ahead in Battersea Park that he is refusing to discuss the championship's back-up plans for the race in the UK capital.

Agag and deputy Mayor of London Sir Edward Lister have revealed that there are alternatives should Formula E's preferred option of the 200-acre park in the London Borough of Wandsworth fail to come to fruition.

Asked to talk about other options for the London race scheduled for June 27 next year, Agag replied: "I prefer not to at the moment: we are focusing on this one for the moment.

"Formula E will happen in London and I am very confident that it will happen in Battersea."

It is understood that one potential candidate is a circuit utilising access roads and car-parking space at the O2 Arena, formerly the Millennium Dome, in Greenwich. Other options, including a track laid out around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, have already been discounted.

Formula E announced Battersea Park as its "chosen option" for the finale of its inaugural season at last night's global launch of its inaugural season, which begins in Beijing in September. That does not mean that the race will go ahead in Battersea Park: Formula E and the local council still have to consult with residents groups and apply for the necessary planning permission.

Formula E is planning a circuit of between 1.55 and 1.86 miles laid out on existing roads within the Thames-side park.
