F1: Gutierrez ruled out of qualifying

Esteban Gutierrez will not take part in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix thanks to chassis damage sustained when he crashed during Saturday morning's free practice session.

The Mexican spun at the Turn 3/4 chicane during FP3 and hit the wall on the outside of the corner, ending his participation in practice. The team has since discovered damage to the front of the chassis that cannot be repaired in the available time.

As a result, Sauber will have to build up its spare chassis for Gutierrez to race on Sunday, with the two-hour gap between practice and qualifying not giving enough time to do this.

Formula 1 regulations have long banned spare cars, but teams are allowed to build up a car in situations like this, such as at the 2010 Monaco GP when Fernando Alonso was unable to run in qualifying following a practice crash.
