Lancaster to make Le Mans debut

GP2 driver Jon Lancaster will make his Le Mans 24 Hours debut with the Swiss Race Performance LMP2 team in June.

The 25-year-old Briton will share the Race Performance ORECA-Judd/BMW 03 with team owner Michel Frey and prototype regular Franck Mailleux, who finished second in last weekend's European Le Mans Series opener at Silverstone.

Lancaster, who finished third on his P2 debut with the Greaves Zytek team at last year's World Endurance Championship finale in Bahrain, said: "Michel wants a good result at Le Mans and knows that I'll do a good job and won't crash.

"With the driver lineup we have, I think we have got to be in with a chance if we don't have any major dramas. This will be good for my CV and could open doors in LMP1, which is only going to continue to grow over the next few years."

Frey added: "We like Jon and he is very team-oriented."

Lancaster had been due to try the Race Performance ORECA at the official ELMS test at Paul Ricard earlier this month but was unable to drive after Frey crashed heavily on the first day. He is hopeful of sampling the car before the Le Mans Test Day on June 1 and explained that the team was trying to arrange a test at Magny-Cours.

Lancaster started his second season of GP2 with the Dutch MP Motorsport squad and explained that it was "pretty likely" he would remain with the team for the second round of the championship at Barcelona on May 10-11.
