WRC: FIA won't keep Toyota waiting on rules

World Rally Championship Commission president Carlos Barbosa says the FIA will not keep Toyota waiting for key details of key technical regulation changes.

The manufacturer has made plain its intention to wait for the 2017 World Rally Car rules to be set before deciding on its future plans in rallying. While TMG developed Toyota's Yaris Cup car in 2012 (pictured, TOP) and Toyota began testing a Yaris WRC in Italy last week (LEFT), the former multiple world champion has yet to cement its decision to return to the WRC.

"Toyota is waiting," said Barbosa. "They knock on the door and they will come to Finland to see more. They wait to know what is the car.

"New manufacturers want to come. But they need to know what is coming in 2017 and they need to know now – they want to build the car. We must, and we will, decide very quickly what is the car for 2017.

"The first meeting is in Portugal. It's not possible to wait until next season for the rules, the manufacturers will not have time to build and test the 2017 car in time."

Toyota Motorsport has confirmed the current test Yaris will only be used for testing purposes and will not be homologated for competition.
