A few night races have always been a fixture on the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Presented by GEICO calendar each year. In 2014, however, the series is making a special push to feature night races as it returns to the grass roots tradition of Friday and Saturday night racing.
Five weekends of seven regular-season events will feature nighttime double-headers, including both the now-traditional September date for Wild West Motorsports Park in Sparks, Nev., and a new second date for the popular track in May. Another big change to the season is that the regular season will feature only 14 races; the final weekend at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park will include only the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup, also a night race. Unless a regular-season event is postponed or cancelled, the points chase will end at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in September.
The season begins as it has for the last several years in March with daytime races at Wild Horse Motorsports Park in Chandler, Ariz., (formerly Firebird Raceway) before heading to Lake Elsinore in Southern California. Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif., and Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, also remain fixtures on the schedule.
The series is hoping to further increase its live audience, which grew 18 percent in 2013. A full television schedule is also on tap for 2014, with 80 hours of coverage scheduled for eight networks, including a repeat of the live telecast of the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup on MAVTV.
