Doohan signs up for Race of Champions

Motorcycle racing legend Mick Doohan will return to the Race of Champions again this season.

The five-time 500cc world champion has contested the RoC on five previous occasions, and last year got as far as the quarter finals of the individual event before being eliminated by Michael Schumacher. He will again join up with multiple V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup to represent Australia in the Nations Cup section, in which the pair reached the 2012 semi finals.

“Of course it’s tough for a bike racer to come up against so many great drivers but I’ll be determined not to let the side down,” said Doohan. “I don’t get too much competitive action these days but I have a kart circuit at home and I have a buggy with a 600cc engine so I’ll try to get out on that when I can.”

Other 2013 RoC competitors confirmed so far include Schumacher, World Rally champion Sebastien Ogier, World Endurance co-champion Tom Kristensen, ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard and Williams F1 test driver Susie Wolff.

The event takes place in Bangkok on Dec. 14-15.
