Ex-BMW Sauber and Williams Formula 1 test driver Marko Asmer has been earmarked by Fortec Motorsport for the Blancpain GT Series.
The British team is working on a deal for the Estonian to lead its challenge in either the Blancpain Endurance or Blancpain Sprint series with its squad of Mercedes SLS cars.
Asmer, the 2007 British Formula 3 champion, has never raced for Fortec but knows the team well. He has become one of the leading driver coaches in F3 and Formula Renault since his single-seater career ended. He has minimal GT experience, which is restricted to some VLN racing with BMW on the Nurburgring Nordschleife and testing with an Aston Martin at Sepang.
“I would love it,” said Asmer. “I hope we can sort something out. I’ve known Fortec for nine years and I’ve always had a massive respect for those guys.”
Fortec team principal Richard Dutton added: “We’re close to doing something. We want him in the car and we’ll work together to get him in there.”
