Reigning FIA GT1 world champion Marc Basseng will race in the series’ successor at the Slovakia Ring this weekend.

Basseng, who took the final GT1 World title with Markus Winkelhock driving for the Munnich Motorsport squad, will race a Reiter-run Blancpain Racing Lamborghini Gallardo LP560 in the fourth event of the FIA GT Series, which has taken over from the world championship for 2013.

The German is competing in this year’s World Touring Car Championship with Munnich. He will share the Pro Cup GT entry with Reiter regular Albert von Thurn und Taxis. Basseng also contested the Nurburgring 24 Hours in May with Audi.

“I’m looking forward to returning to the series to see how it has developed since last year,” he said. “I’m enjoying the WTCC, but it will be good to get back in a GT car again.”

The additional Blancpain Racing entry is joining the race-winning Gallardo shared by Peter Kox and Stefan Rosina for the remaining three FIA GT rounds. It is likely that Basseng, who raced a Lamborghini Murcielago with Munnich in GT1 World in 2010-11, will also partner von Thurn und Taxis at the Navarra and Baku rounds in September and October, respectively.

“There are no clashes with WTCC and we have agreed that we want to do it, but first I have to see how it goes and how I get along sharing a car with Albert,” said Basseng.

The extra Blancpain entry will be tested by Basseng and von Thurn und Taxis at Spielberg on Tuesday.
