Extreme H postpones second World Cup event

This year's edition of the FIA Extreme H World Cup has been postponed, the event organizers have confirmed.

Initially set for October 29-31 in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia, it was to be the second running of the annual competition for motorsport's only hydrogen-powered series. But owing to logistical challenges brought about by recent events in the region, the 2026 competition will no longer go ahead as planned later this week.

Alternative arrangements for the event to take place in 2027 are already being explored.

“The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) and Extreme H have today confirmed that the second edition of the FIA Extreme H World Cup, scheduled to take place in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia on 29–31 October, has been postponed until 2027,” read a statement issued by the FIA Extreme H World Cup organizers.

“The decision has been taken as a result of logistical and operational challenges affecting the preparations required to deliver the event.

“The FIA and Extreme H remain committed to working with their partners in Saudi Arabia to ensure the successful delivery of the second edition of the FIA Extreme H World Cup in 2027. Both parties thank their partners in Saudi Arabia for their continued cooperation and commitment to the event.”

Last year's inaugural event, and the first of a five-year deal between Qiddiya City and Extreme H, was won by Kevin Hansen and Molly Taylor competing for Jameel Motorsport. The pair won the eight-car showpiece final which followed three days of competition across time trial, head-to-head, and four-car races.

Hansen and Taylor had already been confirmed as returning for this year’s event as part of another eight-car, 16 driver field, driving for Veloce Racing, with whom they competed in Extreme H's predecessor, Extreme E.

Dominik often jokes that he was born in the wrong country – a lover of NASCAR and IndyCar, he covered both in a past life as a junior at Autosport in the UK, but he’s spent most of his career to date covering the sliding and flying antics of the U.S.’ interpretation of rallycross. Rather fitting for a man that says he likes “seeing cars do what they’re not supposed to do”, previously worked for a car stunt show, and once even rolled a rally car with Travis Pastrana. He was also comprehensively beaten in a kart race by Sebastien Loeb once, but who hasn’t been?
