Darrell Waltrip diagnosed with cognitive issues 'likely from injuries incurred during his racing career'

NASCAR champion, Hall of Famer, and former broadcaster Darrell Waltrip will further step back from the public as he deals with a cognitive issue.

Waltrip’s family released the following statement in full:

“We wanted to share a health update with all of Darrell’s friends and fans who have supported him throughout his racing career. Recently, Darrell has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) complicated by possible Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) – likely from injuries incurred during his racing career. While this disease will inevitably progress, thankfully it is currently limited to some minor noticeable symptoms

“As a result, he will be stepping further away from the public limelight. Be assured, Darrell is happy and otherwise healthy – spending time with his wife Stevie, two daughters and his three young grandchildren. We are all grateful for your continued prayer, love, and support!

Waltrip, the older brother of two-time Daytona 500 winner and current NASCAR on Fox analyst Michael Waltrip, is a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion with 84 victories. Darrell Waltrip began his NASCAR career in 1972 and competed mainly in the Cup Series, winning in 17 different seasons. 

Waltrip's final season behind the wheel was in 2000, but he made his last NASCAR national series start in 2006. It was a one-off race in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series driving for his brother at Martinsville Speedway.

After his retirement, Waltrip joined Fox Sports when it entered the sport in 2001 as a broadcast partner. Alongside Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds, Waltrip was a staple in the booth. Waltrip spent 19 seasons on air with Fox Sports.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame selected Waltrip for the 2012 class.
