O’Ward leads IndyCar Race 1 in Milwaukee at red flag

Light but persistent showers brought an extended halt to Saturday’s IndyCar Series race at the Milwaukee Mile, ultimately leading to a postponement until Sunday morning.

A caution was required on lap 65 when sprinkles began to fall over the Wisconsin oval, and by lap 90 of the 250-lap contest, the intensity of the rainfall was enough to warrant a red flag. Drivers were eventually instructed to leave their cars, and the full field is back at their respective transporters as they wait for weather to improve and the track to dry.

At the point of the red flag, Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward was the leader with Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist in second and ECR’s Alexander Rossi in third.

Championship leader Alex Palou held 10th when the caution came out and elected to pit for new tires and refueling, which dropped him to 14th. Title rival Kyle Kirkwood sits seventh.

The race is now set to resume at 9:00am Sunday on FS1, and is scheduled to run to its 250-lap entirety. Race 2 will then follow at 1:00pm on FOX.
