Formal leads Lamborghini surge in second VIR IMSA practice

Lamborghini’s GT3 cars, old and new, finished in the overall top four to conclude second practice for the IMSA Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway.

The No. 45 Wayne Taylor Racing Huracán GT3 EVO2 not only set the fastest time in GTD, but the fastest outright time, a 1m45.591s turned in by Danny Formal. This weekend marks Formal and WTR’s return to VIR for the first time since their chances of victory quite literally went up in flames in a spectacular accident that Formal suffered during the 2025 GT Challenge.

The fastest time in GTD Pro belonged to the No. 4 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports Z06 GT3.R: Nicky Catsburg set the benchmark time with a 1m45.653s, putting him less than two-hundredths ahead of the No. 59 RLL Team McLaren 720S GT3. Max Esterson put in a 1m45.669s late in the 90-minute session to move up to second.

Coming off its emotional win at Road America, the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Temerario GT3 was third fastest in GTD Pro, fourth quickest overall, via a 1m45.675s from Andrea Caldarelli. The No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F GT3 (Jack Hawksworth) and No. 3 Corvette (Alexander Sims) rounded out the top five in GTD Pro.

Over in GTD, the No. 81 DragonSpeed Corvette was second quickest behind the No. 45 WTR Huracán. with Casper Stevenson setting a 1m45.703s. In third was the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 EVO (Robby Foley), followed by two more GTD championship contenders, the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO (Russell Ward), and the No. 27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo (Eduardo Barrichello).

Practice 2 was interrupted by one early red flag when Felipe Fraga in the No. 16 Myers Riley Motorsports Ford went off at Turn 5 and hit the wall. The No. 16 Ford returned to the track late in the session, but will lose its fastest lap in qualifying for bringing out a red flag – as will the No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW, which brought out a red in Practice 1 yesterday.

Qualifying starts at 4:50pm ET.
