Mahindra's de Vries fastest in final London E-Prix practice
Nyck de Vries was quickest in the final practice session of the London E-Prix as more bad luck befell championship contender Mitch Evans.
Mahindra driver de Vries set the pace for much of the session with teammate Edoardo Mortara in tow until a red flag was brought out for Lucas di Grassi after his Lola Yamaha Abt stopped at Turn 6 with the car going into red mode.
When the session resumed, de Vries continued to set the pace, ending with a best time of 1m 07.118. Cupra Kiro's Dan Ticktum went second quickest, just 0.030s off de Vries' benchmark, with Envision Racing's Sebastien Buemi third, a further 0.076s back.
Saturday race winner Pascal Wehrlein was fourth for Porsche, ahead of Citroen's Nick Cassidy and the second Envision of Joel Eriksson.
Maximilian Guenther was seventh for DS Penske, with Jake Dennis eighth as he looks to overcome a slim five point deficit to Wehrlien in the standings later in the day.
The top-10 was completed by Jaguar TCS Racing's Antonio Felix da Costa and Mortara.
Outgoing champion Oliver Rowland was 11th for Nissan, ahead of Porsche's Nico Mueller and Taylor Barnard of DS Penske.
di Grassi ended up 14th despite his session coming to an early end. He went quicker than Felipe Drugovich of Andretti, Citroen's Jean-Eric Vergne, and Kiro's Pepe Marti.
Zane Maloney and Norman Nato were 18th and 19th for Lola and Nissan respectively, with Evans at the bottom of the times after suffering a technical issue.
A spokesperson for the team explained that what was initially thought to be a brake-by-wire issue was later suspected to be a DC/DC unit problem.
“In FP3 today Mitch Evans was unable to complete any push laps due to a technical issue,” the team said in a statement issued to RACER. “This was initially flagged to be a brake-by-wire issue, but is suspected to be due to a fault in the DC/DC unit (both the BBW system and DC/DC are championship-spec components).
“The team changed the DC/DC during the session enabling Mitch to get back out and complete installation laps. Mitch will be out for Qualifying in Group A.”
Evans, who won't face a penalty for the change, sits 19 points off the championship lead ahead of what will be his final race for Jaguar after a decade-long stint at the team.
