Brutskiy wins opening Formula DRIFT round at Stafford

PROSPEC veteran Dmitriy Brutskiy – a two-time champion in 2020 and 2021 – claimed victory at the inaugural Formula DRIFT event held at Stafford Motor Speedway. After placing third in Round 1, the win has propelled Brutskiy to the lead of the PROSPEC standings by a healthy 17-point margin

Brutskiy’s points lead was stretched by the early dismissal of Round 1 winner, Cory Talaska in the Fuelab / Yellow Speed Racing 2JZ E36 BMW. Talaska was eliminated from the Top 16 by rookie Braden Lons, which relegated him to ninth on the night and fourth in the title race

Lons would continue his skyward trajectory into the Final, despite suffering a separated shoulder. The 15-year-old drove through the pain magnificently until it went off the rails when he collided with Brutskiy into Outside Zone 3 during their first run. The impact forced Brutskiy’s BMW into a spin and the mistake proved unrecoverable during their second run

Lons’ second place bumped him from eighth to third in the PROSPEC standings and second in the rookie title race behind Jason Webb.

Webb, placed second in Round 1 and was knocked out of the Great 8 but placed fifth in Connecticut, allowing him to retain his second place in the PROSPEC standings by a single point from Lons

Fourteen-year-old Camren Sorensen’s third place equaled Hiroya Minowa as the youngest driver to stand on a Formula DRIFT podium. Sorensen, driving the 1100hp Optima Battery / Sorensen Motorsports BMW was dispatched in the Final 4 heats by Lons, but the podium position elevated Sorensen from ninth to sixth overall.
