The hits keep coming for Cup rookie Zilisch

The NASCAR Cup Series threw another punch at Connor Zilisch on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.

Zilisch had two different spins in the first nine laps with his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet. The first one, he got away with by avoiding significant contact with another driver and bouncing the left rear off the outside of the Turn 4 wall. It occurred on lap 2.

“It just snapped,” Zilisch said over the No. 88 team radio. “Gosh, man.”

The second incident, another spin, ended his afternoon. Zilisch spun off Turn 2 and hit the inside backstretch wall on lap 9.

“We’re done,” he said on the radio. “Gosh, man. Oh my god. I just got loose.”

The first driver out of the event, Zilisch will be credited with a last-place finish. It is his third straight crash and DNF.

“I was really loose,” Zilisch said after exiting the race. “It’s just unfortunate; another short race for us. Thank you, WeatherTech, for being a part of it. We’ll go try and get them at Pocono next week.”

In the last three races – Charlotte, Nashville, and Michigan – Zilisch has earned three points. He has four top-20 finishes in 15 races and entered the weekend 34th in the championship standings, the second-to-last driver in points of full-time competitors.
