Vanthoor puts BMW M Team WRT on top in final IMSA practice in Detroit

All 21 cars took part in a 20-minute pre-race practice session before Saturday’s IMSA Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic.

A morning warm-up in all but name, all 20 minutes went by with no major incidents, setting the stage for today’s 100-minute race starting at 4:10 PM ET (local time), with live streaming coverage in over 200 countries on the official IMSA YouTube channel, and in the United States on Peacock.

Dries Vanthoor in the No. 24 BMW M Team WRT Hybrid V8 turned in the fastest time at 1m06.950s, followed by the No. 40 Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing V-Series.R and the No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963.

The pole-sitting No. 31 Whelen Cadillac was eighth-fastest; Earl Bamber will start today’s race up front after taking his first IMSA pole position since the 2015 Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.

In GTD Pro, Nicky Catsburg in the No. 4 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports Z06 GT3.R (1m10.527s) went just nine milliseconds quicker than the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Temerario GT3 in second, with the No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F GT3 in third.

Though they entered the course, the No. 15 Vasser Sullivan Lexus and No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW elected to do no more than a few installation laps.
