'Communication breakdown' to blame for Collet's Indy qualifying infringement
AJ Foyt Racing Team President Larry Foyt has cited a breakdown in communication as the reason for one of his three Indianapolis 500 entries failing post-qualifying technical inspection.
Brazil’s Caio Collet was the quickest rookie in the field after qualifying 10th, but was relegated to 32nd after his No. 4 Chevy was discovered to have suspension A-arm covers that were not installed according to the rules. The pieces are required to be used as delivered from Dallara, using the mounting hardware provided by Dallara.
"There was a miscommunication issue which resulted in a technical infraction on the No. 4 car,” Foyt said. “It was a costly mistake on our part, and not intended for a performance gain. I feel terrible for Caio, who put forth such a great effort in qualifying to become the fastest rookie. He is a talented young driver and I have no doubt he'll come through the field.
"This is a setback, but drivers and teams don't make it to this level without facing challenges and overcoming them. I have full confidence in Caio and our team to do the same on race day."
The sister cars for Santino Ferrucci and Katherine Legge passed post-qualifying inspection.
Collet also lost the points he earned for making it into the Fast 12.
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing's Jack Harvey was moved to 33rd for the same violation, but was not part of the Fast 12 – he qualified 29th – and therefore did not earn points.
