All-Star Race field set after messy first two segments

It took a chaotic and crash-marred two segments, but the All-Star Race field has been set at Dover Motor Speedway.

The first two segments advanced eight drivers into the main event. NASCAR took the combined average finishes from the first two segments to determine who advanced.

1. Connor Zilisch
2. Erik Jones
3. Michael McDowell
4. Alex Bowman
5. Ty Dillon
6. Noah Gragson
7. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
8. AJ Allmendinger

Daniel Suarez was the fan vote winner.

There were two multi-car crashes in the first segment. The first occurred as the field went into Turn 1 on lap 2 after contact among Kyle Larson, Todd Gilliland and Ryan Preece. It also collected Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Cole Custer, Daniel Suarez, and John Hunter Nemechek.

Carson Hocevar had a right-front tire go down and hit the wall to bring the caution out on lap 14. Then the second major incident occurred with six laps to go in the segment. It started with Riley Herbst getting sideways off Turn 4 and being tagged by Alex Bowman. Among those collected were Elliott, Nemechek, Herbst, Christopher Bell and AJ Allmendinger.

Bubba Wallace won the segment under caution. The top 26 finishers were then inverted, but the top four were all in the garage because of being in the second incident.

The second 75-lap segment started with AJ Allmendinger and Shane van Gisbergen on the front row. It took six laps before the first caution flew when Brad Keselowski, Ross Chastain and Wallace crashed on the backstretch.

On lap 15, the second caution flew when van Gisbergen spun while racing Allmendinger for the race lead. The third and final caution flew on lap 51 for a Ty Gibbs spin, but like van Gisbergen, he did not hit anything.

Elliott and Chastain were eliminated from the All-Star Race because of the incidents they were involved in. As such, it opened two additional spots in the final segment for drivers to advance into that weren’t previously locked in.

Initially, there were to be six drivers to transfer before the fan vote winner.

10. Alex Bowman
