Supercars ace Mostert to race for Vasser Sullivan Lexus at Detroit
Vasser Sullivan Racing will enter its two Lexus RC F GT3s in the upcoming Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, with the No. 15 car to be headlined by reigning Australian Supercars champion Chaz Mostert.
Mostert will share the No. 15 Lexus with Aaron Telitz, who won GTD at Long Beach in April and currently sits third in the GTD drivers’ standings after four rounds. Mostert is the star driver for Walkinshaw TWG Racing and the new Toyota GR Supra in the Supercars Championship, a two-time winner of the Bathurst 1000, and a class winner at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and Spa 24 Hours. He finished second in this year’s Rolexa 24, sharing the 75 Express Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO with Kenny Habul, Will Power and Maro Engel.
“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to race for Vasser Sullivan,” said Mostert, who’ll make his first IMSA sprint race start after several cameo appearances in IMSA endurance rounds. "I’ve raced in the States a few times and always thought that the team looks so professional and like a tight-knit family, so it’s an honor to be able to race for the team. The Lexus RC F GT3 car looks incredible, and I can’t wait to get my first laps.
“I’m new to the Toyota-Lexus family and being able to get this opportunity, being an Australian driver is very much a pinch-yourself moment. I can’t wait to get to Detroit! I love street tracks and am looking forward to the challenge. I can’t thank my Supercar team, Walkinshaw TWG Racing, enough for allowing me to compete.”
“We’re eager to return to the streets of Detroit for this year’s Grand Prix,” said Jeff Bal, director of motorsport for Lexus Racing and the recently rebranded Gazoo Racing. “Both RC F GT3s have a history of good runs in Detroit. Our drivers have proven they can compete for wins on any race weekend, and I know they’re hungry to keep the Lexus up front.
“The addition of pairing Aaron with Chaz gives us another bullet in GTD Pro, allowing Lexus and Vasser Sullivan two powerful shots at victory. Big thanks to Andy Graves, Bruce Stewart and the entire Walkinshaw TWG Racing team for allowing us to have Chaz run with us while he’s in the middle of defending his Supercars title this year in the GR Supra. We’re looking forward to this one, for sure.”
In the sister No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3, Jack Hawksworth and Ben Barnicoat are coming off back-to-back GTD Pro pole positions, but finished only ninth at Laguna Seca after struggling with tire degradation and falling on the wrong end of strategy.
