UPDATED: NASCAR racer Biffle and family believed dead in crash of private jet
Charlotte's WSOC-TV reports officials of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol as saying they believe that NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his immediate family were killed when his private jet crashed Thursday at Statesville Regional Airport. Officials are awaiting confirmation from the medical examiner before the identities of the victims are confirmed.
The Cessna C550 business jet owned by Biffle crashed while landing at Statesville Regional Airport Thursday morning, killing seven people, according to the FAA and local authorities. U.S. Congressman Richard Hudson (R, N.C.) subsequently released a statement via social media in which he said that Biffle, his wife and children were among the dead.
WSOC reports that the crash occurred at approximately 10:20am at the airport, which is located about 45 miles north of Charlotte. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office reported confirmed fatalities. The station reports a witness who observed the incident stated that the plane was “way too low” before it crashed.
More details on this developing story as they become available.
