Lola extends partnership with Yamaha in Formula E
Lola has extended its partnership with Yamaha ahead of the introduction of Formula E’s GEN4 regulations.
The revived British brand partnered with the Japanese giant ahead of the current Formula E season to develop powertrains which it has supplied to Abt. But even before the first race, Lola had committed to GEN4, which will arrive next season.
Now it is confirmed that it will remain aligned with Yamaha for the upcoming era, joining Nissan, Jaguar, Porsche and Stellantis with the Maserati brand in confirming its intentions to supply the next generation of Formula E drivetrains.
“Working alongside Yamaha Motor on the development of the powertrain the Lola Yamaha ABT team is currently using in Formula E has been a mutually beneficial and positive experience,” said Lola Cars chairman Till Bechtolsheimer. “Having already committed to GEN4 ourselves, I’m so pleased that Yamaha Motor will be continuing this journey in electric racing with us. With their vast experience and commitment to advancing sustainable mobility, they are the perfect partner for Lola Cars and we look forward to continuing to drive innovation through motorsport with them.”
Yamaha Motor’s managing executive officer and director Heiji Maruyama added that his company’s continued involvement in Formula E will help it across the many facets of its business.
“Yamaha Motor is accelerating its research and development of various technologies to acquire and enhance new core technologies that will provide Kando [a Japanese expression for the simultaneous feelings of deep satisfaction and intense excitement that we experience when we encounter something of exceptional value] to our fans and contribute to sustainability in the future,” he said. “One of these initiatives is the acquisition of advanced energy management technology that will be honed in Formula E.
“We will continue to take on the challenge into the GEN4 era as a technical partner of Lola Cars. We are very proud and excited to enhance our technology on the world's highest stage of electric racing with our reliable partner.”

Dominik often jokes that he was born in the wrong country – a lover of NASCAR and IndyCar, he covered both in a past life as a junior at Autosport in the UK, but he’s spent most of his career to date covering the sliding and flying antics of the U.S.’ interpretation of rallycross. Rather fitting for a man that says he likes “seeing cars do what they’re not supposed to do”, previously worked for a car stunt show, and once even rolled a rally car with Travis Pastrana. He was also comprehensively beaten in a kart race by Sebastien Loeb once, but who hasn’t been?
