Eight Cup teams fail inspection at Richmond
Eight teams, including four that had qualified inside the top 10, failed inspection Saturday afternoon at Richmond Raceway.
The qualifying times for all eight NASCAR Cup Series teams were disallowed and each driver will start at the rear of the field. Three teams failed inspection multiple times and will start at the rear in addition to having their race engineers ejected for tonight's Toyota Owners 400 (7:30 p.m. ET, FOX).
Failing once were the cars of Erik Jones (who qualified second, photo above), Daniel Suarez (ninth), Jimmie Johnson (10th), and Joey Gase (3th). Each team made it through inspection on its second attempt.
Failing inspection twice were the cars of Chase Elliott (who qualified seventh), Denny Hamlin (18th), and Matt Tifft (20th). All three cars passed on their third attempt.
Because they failed inspection, each team picked pit stalls for Saturday night’s race after those who passed inspection.
