Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK’s third drivers for the FIA WEC Sebring 1000 Miles have been set.
Billy Johnson will return in the No. 66 Ford GT that he helped guide to victory at Spa last May alongside Stefan Mucke and Olivier Pla. But the other driver is more of a surprise. Jonathan Bomarito, (who has ties to the team via Multimatic) will race a Ford GT GTE for the first time in the No. 67 alongside Harry Tincknell and Andy Priaulx.
As a result, Tincknell and Bomarito will compete in both races of the Sebring doubleheader together, as they will also be teammates in the No. 55 Mazda Team Joest RT24-P in IMSA.
Meanwhile, 29 of the 34 cars entered for the WEC’s pre-event Sebring test have confirmed their participation, leaving five to sit the race out. DragonSpeed’s BR1 LMP1 and ORECA 07 LMP2 will not run, and neither will the two Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECAs or the sole Corvette Racing C7.R.
Both DragonSpeed and JCDC tested privately at Sebring earlier this month, however. Corvette Racing, which is racing in the IMSA and WEC races during ‘Super Sebring’ week, has years of experience racing the C7.R at the Floridia circuit.
There is just one new driver name on the list: BMW’s John Edwards. The American driver, who will be bringing his considerable Sebring experience to BMW Team MTEK over the two days, is listed against both M8 GTEs.
Also of note is that the test will be Brendon Hartley’s first official WEC event as an SMP Racing driver in LMP1. Only three of the six LMP1 cars are set to run with three drivers.
