Truex leads opening Homestead practice
Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title contenders Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch led the way in opening practice at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Truex, both the defending champion and race winner, was fastest with a lap of 173.997mph (31.035s). Busch followed at 173.299mph.
Truex and Busch finished 1-2 last year at Homestead.
Completing the top five were Clint Bowyer at 172.977mph, Chase Elliott at 172.900mph and title contender Kevin Harvick at 172.828mph. Kurt Busch (172.734mph), Austin Dillon (172.673mph), Erik Jones (172.623mph), Jamie McMurray (172.607mph), and Brad Keselowski (172.403mph) rounded out the top 10.
The fourth championship contender, Joey Logano, was 16th on the speed chart. Logano posted a lap of 172.194mph.
No driver ran 10 consecutive laps during practice. Ty Dillon ran the most laps at 26.
UP NEXT: The 1 hour, 20-minute session was the only one scheduled for Friday. Teams will qualify for the Ford EcoBoost 400 at 6:10 p.m. ET.
