Elliott storms to Kansas win as Round of 8 set

After going 98 races without being able to seal the deal, Chase Elliott has become a closer when the misfortune of others puts him in a fortunate position.

For the second time in the Round of 12, Elliott wound up in victory lane at Kansas Speedway. Elliott cycled to the race lead on Lap 223 when Brad Keselowski pulled down pit road, and Elliott led the final 44 laps.

Clearing the path for Elliott to inherit the race lead was a speeding penalty for Kevin Harvick, who had led 76 laps to that point.

Elliott held off Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson for his third career NASCAR Cup Series win. Already locked into the next round of the playoffs because of his late-race heroics at Dover two weeks ago, Elliott padded his playoff points for the Round of 8.

Keeping Kyle Busch at bay “was awesome,” Elliott told NBC Sports.

“I just enjoy racing with him,” he said. “I obviously got lucky with Kevin having his penalty; I thought we were really, really equally matched there. I wish we could have raced him straight up obviously, but had a great car today.

“It’s been a great couple of months, so we’ve got to keep it rolling. This is the time of year that counts.”

Larson charged as hard as he could in the final laps, knowing he needed to win the race to advance in the playoffs.

Completing the top five were Erik Jones and Martin Truex Jr.

Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney, pole-sitter Joey Logano, Alex Bowman and Aric Almirola rounded out the top 10. Logano led a race-high 100 laps and won the first stage, which was his fourth stage win of the season.

Kevin Harvick finished 12th following the speeding penalty. Harvick won the second stage, his 16th stage win of the season.

Eliminated from the playoffs were Keselowski, Blaney, Larson, and Bowman.

The Hollywood Casino 400 featured 11 lead changes among eight drivers and three caution flags.
