An announcement could come as early as Saturday that Ryan Newman will join Roush Fenway Racing next season.

Newman, 40, announced last week his departure from Richard Childress Racing and the No. 31 team at year’s end but said he still planned to compete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series going forward.

At Roush, Newman would take over the No. 6 Ford that is currently being split between Trevor Bayne and Matt Kenseth. Bayne had been the full-time driver of the car since 2015 before Roush announced in April that 2003 champion Kenseth was returning. An 11th-place effort by Bayne last month at Bristol Motor Speedway is the team’s best finish. Neither Roush car qualified for the playoffs this season, and both are also winless.

Newman has been with RCR since 2014. In his first season with the company, Newman qualified for the Championship 4 and finished second in points. His last victory came last season in the spring Phoenix race.
