Joey Logano was fastest in the opening Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice as Ford and Toyota swept the first nine spots Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Logano’s lap of 189.653mph was 0.029s faster than playoff co-leader Kevin Harvick, who was second quickest with a lap of 189.460mph. Playoff drivers made up the nine fastest cars in practice for the opening race of the first round of the playoffs.
Harvick’s Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Aric Almirola was third fastest (188.864mph). Erik Jones was the fastest Toyota in fourth at 188.640mph. Logano, Harvick, Almirola, Jones and Kurt Busch (188.140mph) in fifth only ran five laps each in the session, which was incident-free. It’s the only practice session before qualifying.
Playoff co-leader Kyle Busch was sixth (188.062mph), followed by Denny Hamlin (187.957mph), Martin Truex Jr. (187.728mph) and Clint Bowyer (187.676mph). Jamie McMurray (187.637mph) was the only non-playoff driver in the top 10.
Of the additional playoff drivers, Kyle Larson finished the session 12th, Chase Elliott 13th, Ryan Blaney 15th, Brad Keselowski 16th, Austin Dillon 18th, Alex Bowman 19th and seven-time series champion Jimmie Johnson was 21st.
Truex and Daniel Suarez served 30-minute practice holds for failing tech at least three times in Indianapolis. Fifteen-minute holds were served by Austin Dillon for failing tech twice at Darlington and JJ Yeley for Bristol; Larson and BJ McLeod for being late to tech at Indy and Ross Chastain for missing the Indy rookie meeting.
