Jamie Whincup is set to make a rare non-Supercars appearance when he makes his IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Whincup, the seven-time Supercars champion who drives for Red Bull Holden Racing Team, will share fellow Aussie driver/owner Kenny Habul’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the GT Daytona category.

“I’ve watched Champ Car [at Laguna Seca] for many years, back when I was a kid and just really want to experience the Corkscrew, to be honest,” Whincup, who has not been to Laguna Seca, told

“Kenny sent me an email and I thought ‘gee, this might be a good one to do’, so I put my hand up.”

“I’ve got no plans, there’s nothing more to it than it came up as the right thing at the right time and I grabbed it with two hands.”

Earlier this year Whincup joined Habul, Raffaele Marciello and Tristan Vautier in a second-place finish in the Bathurst 12 Hour. That ride marked Whincup’s second-ever drive in a GT car — his debut came in the 2017 Bathurst 12 Hour, which he won with Toni Vilander and Craig Lowndes in a Ferrari 488 GT3 for Maranello Motorsport. Besides the Bathurst 12 Hour, he’s limited his racing to two appearances in the Race of Champions in 2012 and 2014.

Although he said he has “no plans,” the PIRTEK Enduro Cup-opening Sandown 500 is the following weekend.

“I think we’re testing on the Tuesday before the event, which means I can only fly out on the Wednesday and then I’ve got the Sunday night flight back, to make sure I don’t have any jetlag before Sandown,” he said.

“It’s a very, very quick in-and-out.”
