A hotly contested 15 minutes of GTD qualifying saw the existing class qualifying lap record shredded as Jack Hawksworth got the jump on the field in the final two minutes just as the session seemed to be winding down. The Briton took the No. 15 3GT Racing Lexus around in 1m44.499s, taking a chunk out of the best set by Christopher Mies in the No. 29 Montaplast by Land Motorsport Audi R8 LMS GT3 (1m44.611s).
It is Hawksworth’s second class pole in three races after taking the top time at Mid Ohio last month.
The pole lap was set with no improvement from the former IndyCar regular until the final sector, but a mighty effort there saw the Lexus take advantage.
Row two will see the sister No. 14 Lexus alongside the No. 86 Meyer Shank Acura NSX GT3, with Kyle Marcelli and Alvaro Parente just three hundredths of a second apart, both around a tenth back from Mies.
Lawson Aschenbach (No. 93 Meyer Shank Acura) and Jeff Segal (No. 63 Scuderia Corse Ferrari 488 GT3) completed row three on the class grid, the top six separated by three tenths of a second.
The GTD entries were down to 17 for the qualifying session, with the No. 73 Park Place Racing Porsche still requiring attention after its clash with the No. 77 Mazda DPi in the morning practice session.
