Report: Director set for Ford-vs-Ferrari Le Mans film, Matt Damon tipped to star

Variety reports that veteran feature film director James Mangold (“3:10 to Yuma” (2007), “Knight and Day”, The Wolverine”) has been chosen to direct the planned 20th Century Fox Production of an as-yet unnamed motion picture chronicling the epic battle between Ferrari and Ford at Le Mans in the 1960s.

According to Variety, the studio declined to discuss any possible casting but the entertainment trade magazine cites sources as saying Mangold would like to cast Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby, who was tasked by Henry Ford II with leading Ford’s program, and Christian Bale in the role of British driver Ken Miles (pictured in the Ford GT40 Mk2 he shared with Denny Hulme at Le Mans in 1966).

The project has been stalled in Hollywood for several years, with a previous planned production having been tipped to star Tom Cruise as Shelby back in 2013.
