Teenage Moto3 rider dies after crash at Catalan Grand Prix

Fourteen-year-old Spanish Moto3 rider Andreas Perez Manresa has died after an accident during Round 4 of the FIM CEV Repsol Moto3 Junior World Championship at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The incident happened Sunday in the second race of the day for the Moto3 category. Perez was involved in a crash with several riders in the exit of Turn 5. He received medical attention on track before being airlifted to a hospital.

He succumbed to his injuries Monday morning.

Perez was a standout in the 2017 European Talent Cup, taking two wins and a number of podiums to end the year in fourth. For 2018, he had moved up to the Moto3 Junior World Championship, competing with the Reale Avintia Academy team.

“We have lost a great rider, but moreover a great person and we will miss him a lot,” the team said in a statement. “The team and all its sponsors want to offer all their support and wishes to Andreas’s family in these extremely difficult moments.”
