Hondas pace morning IndyCar Open Test session
Monday's opening round of testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was Honda-heavy with five of the six top speeds, led by Marco Andretti.
Andretti, who has a second, three thirds and a fourth in his 12 starts at IMS, turned the fastest lap of 223.997mph in his US Concrete Honda.
Last year's Indianapolis 500 winner, Takuma Sato, was second quickest at 223.359mph in his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda and 2008 winner Scott Dixon was the only other driver in the 223mph range with a top speed of 223.199mph in his PNC Honda.
Gabby Chaves, driving for Indy-based Mike Harding Racing, led the Chevrolet brigade with a lap of 222.838mph, good for fourth, as 21 cars took times.
Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 Indy victor, was clocked at 222.727mph in the DHL Honda and Graham Rahal was close behind at 222.663mph in United Rental Honda.
Sebastien Bourdais made his return to IMS following last May's savage crash and was 11th best at 221.250mph.
The afternoon session begins at 1 p.m. ET.
