Haas has confirmed it will keep Indian young driver Arjun Maini as a development driver for the 2018 season alongside Santino Ferrucci.
American teenager Ferrucci was announced as retaining his development position on Wednesday after making the step up from GP3 to Formula 2 during last season. Maini joined the Haas line-up in May of last year and duly won in GP3 the same weekend, and the 20-year-old will now step up to F2 as Ferrucci’s teammate at Trident.
Reflecting on his role with Haas, Maini says the team has been assisting him as he prepares for his debut F2 season this year.
“I’m extremely proud to be a part of Haas F1 Team,” Maini said. “Being involved with an F1 program has really accelerated my learning in terms of what I need to do on the racetrack and with my engineers. In fact, it’s already helped me transition from GP3 to F2. I’m one step closer to my goal of competing in Formula 1 thanks to Haas F1 Team’s support.”
A solid season saw Maini finish in the top 10 of the drivers’ standings in GP3 last year – including his victory in Barcelona in May – and Haas team principal Guenther Steiner says he is keen to see how the Indian performs at a higher level in 2018.
“Arjun enjoyed a breakout season in GP3 last year and we’re keeping a close watch on his progress this year in F2,” Steiner said. “He has a history of finding success at every level in which he’s competed and we’re supportive of his efforts as he steps up to F2.”
During the final pre-season F2 test in Bahrain last week, Maini set the fastest time on the second day of running, ending the week second only to Maximilian Gunther by just 0.023s overall.
