Kyle Busch was fastest in final Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice at Auto Club Speedway.
Busch ran a lap of 185.668 mph to best Toyota teammate and pole-sitter for Sunday’s race Martin Truex Jr., who ran 185.319 mph.
Completing the top five were Jimmie Johnson (184.525 mph), Kevin Harvick (184.308 mph) and Brad Keselowski (184.280 mph). Harvick is looking to join an elite club with a fourth consecutive victory tomorrow and was fastest in two of the weekend’s three practice sessions.
The rest of the top 10 were defending race winner Kyle Larson (184.266 mph), Clint Bowyer (184.073 mph), Ryan Blaney (184.021 mph), Ryan Newman (183.875 mph) and Jamie McMurray (183.528 mph).
Because they failed qualifying inspection twice on Friday, there were nine drivers who had to serve 15-minute penalties: Chase Elliott, Aric Almirola, Denny Hamlin, William Byron, AJ Allmendinger, Johnson, Cole Whitt and Alex Bowman. For a qualifying inspection violation, Michael McDowell also served a 15-minute penalty.
There were no incidents during the 50-minute session.
