Both of Mazda’s RT24-P IMSA Daytona Prototype internationals have been moved to the back of their class after the same post-qualifying technical infraction was found by series officials.
The Mazda Team Joest Nos. 55 and 77 ran afoul of Rule 9.7.2 which states tape may not be placed over bodywork seams, with exception of the refueling receptacles.
It’s believed the Joest team errantly followed a seam-taping practice that is allowed in the FIA WEC, the last series where it participated prior to taking over Mazda’s WeatherTech Championship program.
When permitted, using thin clear tape to cover smooth the transitions between the nose and chassis, engine cover and chassis, and other key separations in the bodywork is performed to improve aerodynamics.
The Nos. 55 and 77 will fall from starting seventh and ninth to 15th and 16th for Saturday’s 12-hour race.
