Castroneves leads opening Sebring practice

Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi saw their cars lead the opening IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practice for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Helio Castroneves was fastest with a 1m48.237s lap in the No. 6 Penske Racing Acura DPi. He was followed by Tristan Vautier in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Cadillac DPi at 1m48.387s, and Renger van der Zande in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi with a 1m48.415s.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Ford GTs were first and third in the GTLM class. Dirk Muller was fastest in the No. 66 Ford GT, setting a lap at 1m57.567s, with Richard Westbrook third in the team’s No. 67 at 1m57.821s. Sandwiched in between was Toni Vilander in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE with a 1m57.819s.

In GTD, Lawson Aschenbach was quickest, 2m00.337s in the No. 93 Michael Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3. He was followed by Daniel Serra in the No. 51 Spirit of Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 (2m00.424s); and Christopher Miles in the No. 29 Montaplast Audi R8 LMS GT3 at 2m00.461s.

The session was briefly red flagged when Chris Miller went wide into the tires in Turn 1 driving the No. 99 JDC-Miller Motorsports ORECA 07-Gibson. The car sustained moderate rear-end damage and required a tow, with the team repairing the car in time to have it ready for the end of the session.
